Our Sangha
A sangha is a family, a beloved community.
True River Sangha is a community of friends who come from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared commitment to practicing mindfulness in daily life.
We gather to sit in meditation, explore the teachings, and support each other on the path of mindful living. Our offerings include weekly in-person and online gatherings, days of mindfulness, occasional retreats, and other events. Whether you are new to practice or have walked this path for some time, you are warmly invited to join us.
We cherish the diversity of humanity, a diversity which includes differences in sex, age, race, ethnicity, and national origin, range of abilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, financial means, education, religion and political perspective.
Our Teacher
We follow the teachings of Venerable Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (Thầy, as he is lovingly called by his students). He was a global spiritual leader, poet, and peace activist whose teachings continue to ripple across the world.
The preeminent voice for engaged Buddhism—bringing mindfulness off the cushion and into the heart of everyday life, Thầy spent decades building a global community of mindfulness practitioners, founding Plum Village Monastery in France and authoring over 100 books on mindfulness, peace, and compassion.
His legacy is a vast and vibrant international sangha rooted in the practice of “interbeing”—recognizing the deep interconnectedness of all life.
“You cannot be by yourself alone. You have to inter-be with every other thing.” — Thich Nhat Hanh
Our Practice
We meet each Thursday, 7pm at Heart Space in Media, PA - 215 West Baker Street.
Our practice consists of offering incense, a 20-minute sitting meditation, short chanting, walking meditation, readings and sharing in Circle. There is no cost, but a modest donation is appreciated. Mats, cushions and chairs are provided. Sometimes we have tea. Please arrive a few minutes early to help set up.
On the first Thursday of each month, our practice is a little different. There is no Buddha altar or chanting and we especially welcome those who are new to meditation or working with strong emotions. There is greater emphasis on sharing in Circle.
There is also an option to meet online. Please use the contact form to let us know a little about you and to request the link.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present moment. It is the continuous practice of touching life deeply—in the breath, in the body, in our relationships, and in every task of daily life.
At True River Sangha, we follow a path that many of our members say has helped them transform sorrow, fatigue, and anxiety. Change often comes gradually and gently. Then, one day, you notice: you feel more peaceful, more grounded in reality, more open to Life.
We are connected to local Dharma teachers, to Blue Cliff Monastery in Pine Bush, NY, and to Plum Village in France—places where mindfulness is practiced as a way of life.
In a time of profound change—climate instability, social unrest, uncertainty, and collective overwhelm—mindfulness offers a place of refuge. It is not an escape, but a way of returning to what is most real, most alive, and most compassionate within us.
Together, we learn to water the seeds of clarity, resilience, and love, for ourselves, all beings, and Mother Earth.
