Blue Cliff Monastery

Blue Cliff Monastery, located on 80 peaceful acres in the Hudson Valley of New York, is our regional practice center in the Plum Village tradition. Founded by Thich Nhat Hanh in 2007, it is home to a thriving community of monastics who live, work, and practice together in mindfulness. The monastery welcomes visitors for Days of Mindfulness, seasonal retreats, and periods of personal renewal.

Many members of True River Sangha have practiced at Blue Cliff and continue to draw inspiration and spiritual nourishment from its teachings and community. Whether walking in silence through the forest, sharing a mindful meal, or listening to a Dharma talk, Blue Cliff offers a direct experience of living deeply in the present moment. Our sangha maintains close ties with the monastics and joins in regional retreats and other events throughout the year.

True River Sangha draws inspiration and guidance from the Beloved Community Circle (BCC) Network—a movement of small, local groups practicing mindfulness, mutual care, and engaged action. Rooted in the Plum Village tradition and emerging from the Earth Holders Community, BCCs embody what Thich Nhat Hanh called “the action dimension” of mindfulness: responding to suffering in the world with compassion and clarity.

Beloved Community Circles offer a container for deep connection and shared purpose. Members support one another through life’s joys and sorrows while also taking collective steps to address the interwoven crises of our time, including racial injustice and climate breakdown. For us at True River, this means staying grounded in practice while also showing up for the world with love and courage.

“Once there is seeing, there must be acting. Otherwise, what’s the use of seeing?”
— Thich Nhat Hanh
